Study: Legalizing pot could bring big bucks to Vermont (WCAX)
A controversial new potential revenue source led many Vermont lawmakers to skip their lunch breaks Friday. It’s an income stream the governor ignored Thursday in his budget address: legalizing marijuana for those 21 and older.
“Within the state of Vermont there are probably 60,000-80,000 past month users,” said Beau Kilmer of the Rand Corporation.
A report released Friday by the Rand Corporation found that the market expands fivefold if it draws those living 50 miles beyond Vermont’s borders and fortyfold if it attracts users across the whole Northeast.
“Your tax revenue will be very highly dependent on what your neighbors do, whether they legalize or not, and when they do, whether their taxes are higher or lower,” said Jonathan Caulkins of the Rand Corporation.
